Magic Kingdom and the Keys to the Kingdom Tour

I have been to Disney World with my kids several times over the last decade, with the first year being in 2009! We were all babies in the picture below!!

My husband got to celebrate his 39th birthday during his first Disney trip!

We have gotten to do many activities, ride the majority of the rides at Disney World, and see many of the fabulous shows! We each have our favorites, know a few tricks about how to get that certain FastPass, and love looking forward to our next trip!

New Opportunity

I had the opportunity to go to Disney World with just my then-17-year-old son in March of 2019. We went to Disney World to watch his brother, my then-15-year-old son, play at the Magic Kingdom with his high school marching band.

I love that the band students got special ears for marching! (my kid is the snare drummer with glasses)

It was a great opportunity for both of my sons. The fifteen-year-old got to play the snare drum in the Magic Kingdom this year! This was his second trip to Disney World with his marching band during his high school career and he had a great time! He was able to spend time with his friends while I got to have some good one-on-one time with his older brother.

While our band kid got to be on a charter bus for about eighteen hours, his brother and I flew to Orlando! We spent five days at the Boardwalk Inn and Villas, getting to use our Disney Vacation Club for the first time! That alone was a great experience, but we added our first Disney World Tour to our list of activities for this trip! We did the Keys to the Kingdom tour!!

Our Unique Pre-Tour Experience

I never imagined that I would ever actually get to do one of the fancy Disney World tours, but we did and it was a great experience!!

The staff worked with me prior to even getting to Orlando because the marching band’s performance time was changed to exactly the same time we were supposed to be on the Keys to the Kingdom tour. We booked our tour at the 180-day mark and the band informed us the performance time was changed with less than a week’s notice!!

Less than a week meant I was in a panic and terrified I would have to choose between my two sons!! This was my first opportunity to see any of my children march in Disney World and the Keys to the Kingdom tour was my older son’s birthday present.

I called guest services and the Cast Member was willing and able to move us to a later time on that same day. On the day of our tour, it rained! Not a big deal for me and my older son, because we were prepared ponchos!

More Struggles the Day of our Tour

First, it rained. Not a huge issue for us though! We are prepared to enjoy ourselves and carry ponchos with us anyway. We even ended up getting a Photo Pass photographer to take our picture as she was seeking cover from the rain.

I and my son shortly before the tour started…thankfully the rain went away before our tour was even halfway completed!

However, this was a much bigger deal for my band student, especially since Disney kept having to move back their performance due to the rain. The Cast Members where we met to begin our tour were fantastic! They kept me informed of my son’s marching band performance time since it kept changing.

The rain causes my son’s performance was pushed back so far that our tour had begun. The Cast Member guide in charge of our tour was willing to do the opening presentation near the area where the band would begin marching. This allowed me to be able to see my fifteen-year-old perform before we officially began the tour!

Little-Known Facts

Once our tour began, one of the first things we learned was that all of the American flags on Main Street USA, besides the main flag in the middle of Main Street, were not actual American flags. They were pennants!

They were either missing a star or a stripe and, thus, could be left up all of the time and did not have to be raised and lowered daily like the true American flag. That is something I never noticed before, but I thought it was pretty neat. (I’m typically more focused on the castle and looking for a short like for a Photo Pass photographer than on the flags!)

All the “flags” you can see in the picture below are actually penants!

Another fun fact we learned had to do with a unique historical reference. We learned that they chose the bricks in Liberty Square for a specific reason. They chose the colors of the bricks and their specific pattern to mimic what would have truly been seen at that time in America! (Think open windows and chamber pots….eeewwwww!)

We had special behind the scenes tours!

There were so many special parts to the Keys to the Kingdom Tour! We were able to see and walk through the utilidors under the Magic Kingdom, use the servants’ entrance to enter the Haunted Mansion to take a ride without any wait, and we got a special tour of the Jungle Cruise.

We also had an opportunity to see the area where parade floats are stored and learned about how the floats are made and how they work.

Lunch was Included

Additionally, lunch was part of our tour day. We had lunch at Peco’s Bills. I had no idea that you could get fantastic fajitas at a theme park! Since our tour, we have been back more than once to get fajitas again!

The Keys to the Kingdom tour was fantastic!

The Keys to the Kingdom tour was a great opportunity to see aspects of the Magic Kingdom that we would not have been able to see otherwise and to learn interesting facts!

My 17-year-old said his favorite part of the tour was learning about the history of Disney World and the Magic Kingdom. He added that he enjoyed being able to do and see things that very few people get to do at Disney World, especially going under the Magic Kingdom.

I thought it was neat that we got to walk under all of the activity on the main level of Magic Kingdom and see all of the signs in the utilidors stating what you were under (and finding out that part of EPCOT has an underground area as well)! It was definitely a great experience and I hope to have the opportunity to do another tour in the future!

    1. It was super fun! My teen was thrilled he got to see it, especially because he was the only one of his siblings to get the chance!!

  1. Looks like a great time. That’s awesome your son is so involved with the band. He’ll have those memories to cherish the rest of his life. ‘Drum-lines ROCK!’

    1. I agree completely about drum-line! He has had an amazing experience with band…and he gets to go back to Disney to march one last time in March of 2021!

  2. When my youngest gets a little older, I am totally doing this tour! I also love staying DVC, but we still rent points since that is what makes the most sense for us right now. We don’t really even consider staying anywhere but in villas now. I love the band picture!

  3. That is so fun!!! I’m hoping we’re able to go here as a family either this year or next, now that I’m done having babies and they are getting older.

    1. It’s the best place for memories! Our living room is filled with pictures of our kids at all ages in Disney!

  4. There’s nothing like Disney. Having worked at Disney for 5 years (when I lived in the US) and visited the theme parks every year, it’s hard to define the word fun. I’m glad the whole family enjoyed the whole experience.

    1. They have so many amazing tours! That is the only one we have ever done and I can’t wait to do more at some point!

  5. The tour sounds great, but it’s also quite an experience to be part of the performance at a place like Disney (or to be a family member of a performer). What a special time!

  6. I have never been to Disney. My husband has been wanting to take the kids for a while, But we keep having more lol. One day soon, we will go! Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s awesome that your son played in a band there!

  7. So fun! I had the chance to play at Disney World when I was in marching band and I absolutely loved being there with all of my friends! I bet both of your boys had a blast 🙂

    1. It was amazing for him and his older sister got to do this in the past as well! It was a great adventure for them!!

  8. I had a chance to do that tour when my cousins visited Orlando last year. I choose to meet them at Universal instead but I do know they really enjoyed the tour. Has a FL native and one time Orlando resident, I had no idea that tour existed. So cool that you can see the other side of Disney.
